Fighting Blindness directly employs experienced scientific staff at our headquarters in order to:
- Develop and implement our research strategy
- Investigate new areas of research
- Manage the projects which we fund
- Apply for external funding and support
- Network with research centres
Professor Michael Comer is the Head of Research at Fighting Blindness.
Prof Comer is a former acting Director of Biotechnology at Science Foundation Ireland and has a distinguished international career spanning some 40 years of experience in Research and Development in the Biotech and Bio Medical-Science spheres.
Originally, a native of Belfast, Professor Comer’s career took him via England (1972 – 1978) to Germany (1978 – 1996) where he rose to the position of Vice President of Biotechnological R & D for Boehringer Mannheim (now Roche).

Professor Robin Ali is Associate Director of Fighting Blindness Vision Research Institute.
Prof Ali led the research team from University College London responsible for a landmark breakthrough in gene therapy.
Prof Ali studied genetics as an undergraduate and postgraduate at University College London (UCL), obtaining his PhD in 1993.
He then moved to the MRC National Institute for Medical Research, London.
