After the success of our first research webinar of 2023, we are excited to announce our second free webinar, this time focusing on Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
AMD is a progressive eye disease that affects up to 10% of adults over 65 years of age and is a leading cause of severe vision impairment and blindness in this age group.
Our first speaker, Mr Tomás Burke is a Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Medical Retina, Uveitis and Cataract, based at Mater Misericordiae University and Mater Private Hospitals, Dublin. Mr. Burke will speak about the current clinical care for AMD.
Our second speaker, Sean Poland is an Education, Training and Participation Coordinator, at Vision Sports Ireland. Sean will speak about sports and physical activities for people living with AMD.
The webinar will take place on September 20, 2023, from 5 pm-6 pm.

Mr Tomás Burke
Consultant Ophthalmologist specialising in Medical Retina, Uveitis and Cataract, Mater Misericordiae University and Mater Private Hospitals, Dublin.
Mr. Tomás Burke has extensive experience in the use of retinal imaging in clinical practice, as well as imaging research, having completed a Doctor of Medicine research degree at Columbia University, New York in the field of retinal degeneration. His Ophthalmology training was carried out in Ireland, as well as in the Oxford and Severn regions in the UK. He completed a Fellowship in Medical Retina and Uveitis at Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2018. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Prior to taking up his consultant post in Dublin, he was a consultant at the Bristol Eye Hospital, UK.
Mr. Burke has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, a book chapter, and has presented at conferences both nationally and internationally. He has been Principal Investigator on several studies in medical retina, as well as previously serving as National Institute for Health Research Local Clinical Research lead for Ophthalmology (West of England).
Sean Poland
Education, Training and Participation Coordinator, Vision Sports Ireland.
Sean’s work in Vision Sports Ireland is focused on:
– educating coaches, volunteers, teachers and parents on knowledge and
– understanding of vision impairment and accessibility,
– making sport more accessible through practical training adaptations and guidelines.
Sean has a passion for sport, representing Ireland in Vision Impaired football. Under his remit at Vision Sports Ireland, he also oversees Athletics, Football, Tandem Cycling and Triathlon.
