Participants Came Together for the First-Ever Vision Walk in Marbella, Spain

Trekkers raise funds and awareness for Fighting Blindness

A group of dedicated fundraisers are now home in Ireland  after taking part in the first-ever Vision Walk in Marbella, Spain to support Fighting Blindness.  VSP Vision Care, the only not-for-profit vision benefits company, was the leading sponsor.

The challenge brought participants through the city, countryside and nature trails of Marbella. The Terrazas del Puerto Deportivo near the historic city centre was the starting point for the daily treks.

One of the participants and top fundraiser was Johnny Brady, a business man from Edenderry. When Johnny lost the sight in one of his eyes he received great support from friends, family and Fighting Blindness. After hearing about the walk he signed up and committed to raising funds and awareness for the charity. Johnny organised several fundraising events in Edenderry which were well supported by the local community.

Kevin Whelan, Fighting Blindness CEO, is hugely grateful to Johnny, the Edenderry community and all the participants who took part in the inaugural Vision Walk.

“A huge thank you to our Vision Walkers and the communities behind them, as a small charity we are immensely grateful and humbled by this wonderful support and goodwill.  We are delighted to have partnered with our sponsor VSP Vision Care on the first Vision Walk; their generous contribution goes a long way to achieving our target. We look forward to growing this event for 2018, ” said Whelan.

Thanks to the Vision Walk participants and the support of VSP Vision Care, Fighting Blindness can fund world-leading research into developing treatments and cures for blindness, while caring for people and families through counselling and peer to peer support services.

“VSP Vision Care honours the participants of this year’s Fighting Blindness Vision Walk. Their commitment helps to advance Fighting Blindness mission to cure, advocate for, and empower those who live with sight loss,” said Terri Wilson, VSP Senior Vice President Global Market Solutions. “Without the support of the participants, this ambitious fundraising project would never have come to life.”
