Fighting Blindness is a patient-led charity with a vision to cure blindness, support people living with sight loss and empower patients. We are the only Irish charity funding research into treatments for sight loss. To date, we have invested over €20 million in more than 115 research and clinical projects.

Over the past 35 years, we have grown from a small support group for families affected by retinitis pigmentosa (RP) to a nationally recognised brand.

Reporting to: Research Manager

Job Purpose

Reporting directly to the Research Manager, the role will be responsible for research administration within the department along with leading on the PPI initiatives and assisting in engagement, outreach, and communications activities.

The ideal candidate will have a scientific background and good knowledge of the research landscape in Ireland. They will have strong project management skills along with interpersonal skills.

Role and Responsibilities

Research Administration

• Liaising with funding bodies and grant holders with respect to post-award reporting and financial administration, evaluating progress against original aims of the project.
• Supporting future calls for research including international peer review and pre-award administration.
• Assisting with the organisation and reporting of research focussed meetings.
• Supporting the Target 5000 multi-disciplinary team, liaising with both clinical and scientific stakeholders.
• Reporting the outputs, outcomes and impact of research funded by Fighting Blindness to a variety of stakeholders.
• Performing additional administrative tasks necessary to achieve the overall objectives of the research department and organisation.

Public and Patient Involvement in Research

• Act as main point of contact, coordinating public and patient involvement (PPI) in research including preparation of training packages, facilitating focus groups and providing support to research and clinical community with initiatives.
• Representing Fighting Blindness on external PPI committees.

Engagement and Outreach

• Assisting with the coordination, logistics and development of workshops, Retina Network Ireland and the annual Retina Scientific Conference and Public Engagement Day.
• Outreach activities including representation of Fighting Blindness and the research function at community groups, schools, information events, support programmes etc.

Scientific Communications

• Contribute to science communication activities within Fighting Blindness.
• Respond to research enquiries about Fighting Blindness funded research from patient members

Qualifications and skills

• PhD in health discipline or biomedical science
• Strong organisational and time management skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective working relationships
• Experience in research administration desirable
• Experience in PPI desirable

All employees are currently working remotely due to Government pandemic restriction advice. Position usually based at Fighting Blindness office, 7 Ely Place, Dublin 2.
