Science Communications and Advocacy Workshop

In March 2025, Fighting Blindness hosted its first online Science Communications and Advocacy workshop, for early-stage researchers and clinicians in Inherited Retinal Diseases (IRDs), Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), and the wider rare disease space.

The laptop is placed on a blue desk with a steaming coffee mug and a potted plant beside it. The 'Fighting Blindness' logo is positioned in the upper left corner.

The event featured expert speakers from Fighting Blindness, who shared practical insights into crafting compelling narratives, engaging with policymakers, and using communication strategies to drive awareness and advocate for research in IRDs, AMD, and rare diseases.

Speakers included:

  • Dr. Neil Ward, Head of Advocacy and Communications, Fighting Blindness
  • Konstantina Karagkiozeli, Science Communications Officer, Fighting Blindness
  • Declan Meenagh, Advocacy Officer, Fighting Blindness
  • Dr. Shannon Lee, Research Officer, Fighting Blindness
  • Dr. Rachel Bermingham, Research Manager, Fighting Blindness

Topics covered:

The workshop covered science communications in terms of understanding the media, using social media and how to communicate to a non-scientific audience. Participants also had the opportunity to receive training on writing a lay summary through interactive sessions, practical exercises, and access to the workshop slide deck.

Advocacy plays a crucial role in the rare disease community, ensuring that the voices of those affected are heard and that their needs are prioritized in healthcare policies and research funding. It is also essential in securing access to new treatments, which can often be costly and require strong evidence-based support.

This workshop provided participants with the tools to effectively engage with policymakers, communicate their research impact, and contribute to shaping policies that benefit individuals living with IRDs, AMD, and other rare conditions.

The workshop was well received, with attendees highlighting the value of learning from experts and connecting with peers who share similar goals.
