To round off a fantastically successful Retina 2019, the team traveled to the K-Club in Kildare to co-host a fundraising ball with Victoria Smurfit and her daughter Evie.

Evie has a rare eye condition called Stargardt disease and became our ambassador in 2018. On the night Orla Comerford, a previous recipient, presented her with our annual Empowerment Award – since her diagnosis Evie has worked tirelessly to raise awareness and money for research. Her mission as our ambassador is to make sure another child never feels alone with sight loss again.

Guests were treated to an evening of fine dining and entertainment from Irish rock violinists Sephira and Dan Healy, star of the hit musical Once. Darragh Maloney was MC for the night, overseeing a live auction of donated artwork that included pieces from Tracey Emin and Graham Knuttel.

Donations from the evening are still coming in but we raised in excess of €80,000. Proceeds from the evening will fund on-going and new research into treatments and cures for sight loss.
